Molech, Abortion, and Reason
Molech (also known as Moloch, Milcom, etc.) was a false god in the Old Testament. He is mentioned several times either directly or indirectly in the following verses:
Leviticus 18:21; 20:2-5
I Kings 11:4-7
II Kings 23:10; 16:3; 21:6
II Chronicles 33:4-6
Jeremiah 32:35
Molech was the primary god of the Ammonites, but was worshipped by other nations in the Middle East as well. Even God's own people (Israel) at various times of rebellion engaged in worship of this atrocious deity.
Worship of Molech was horrifying to say the least. The same would consist of an erected image of the god Molech. Inside of which, was an hollowed area where a fire would be stoked to oven temperatures. The worshipers would then proceed to sacrifice their children to this monstrosity by either placing the child directly into the fire, or upon the seeringly hot outstretched arms. Throughout this performance drums and noise would fill the air to drown out the cries of the children. It is also believed that orgies would accompany these acts. Such barbarism was practiced to ensure happiness and well-being of the practicioners.
Now... In the United States we do not have erected gods with altars we sacrifice our children upon, but what do we have?
January 22, 1973, The United States Supreme Court ruled 4-2 in favor of legalizing abortion in Roe vs Wade. Children would once again be sacrificed. Not upon a hollow statue, but upon the altar of "a woman's right to choose". Their lives taken not by fire, but by so-called medical instruments. All conducted and presided over by a new kind of high priest, the abortion doctor. The reason for such a practice... that a pregnant woman may choose to terminate what is considered to be either a mistake, inconvenience, or the result of an unfortunate situation.
Let’s make a comparison of Molech worship and the practice of abortion. Both are a means to an end. Although the early Molech adherents worshipped him as a deity, their reason for doing so was not out of a love for him, but for themselves. They were willing to sacrifice their children out of a self-centered lust for their own happiness and the pursuit of a good life. How much more different is this from today's abortion adherents. Is there a parallel with the mindset of the pro-choice advocate of today? Arguments are made referencing a child's quality of life when faced with the possibility of a handicap, and instances of rape, etc. But, is it truly right to take a child's life based upon such assumptions? How can we know the quality of life for that child will be so awful, especially if that child never has had a better quality of life to compare it to? Should we say the same about children who eventually develop mental illnesses? In instances of rape, should an innocent be the one to pay in blood for the crime of the father?
God has said, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13, KJV). Advocates of abortion have taken upon themselves the power to dehumanize and extinguish innocent life. In doing this they violate the first commandment (Exodus 20:3, KJV) in addition to the sixth (Exodus 20:13, KJV), and set themselves up as God.
Efforts are made to blur the lines of "when life begins", such is a dangerous practice. How can such a precious thing as life be placed upon a subjective shelf. Who's to say within the next five, ten, twenty years life will not be deemed to start until the child has been delivered for a set amount of time. Thus, subjecting the child to possible extermination until a number of hours outside the womb is met. It may sound farfetched, but the existence of abortion itself shows the non-absolute status that many in our nation, along with our law makers have relegated to newly realized human life.
The tactic employed is dehumanization. When you deny personhood to an individual, that person is no longer entitled to any rights. We have seen the same utilized before in history. One need only examine the method Hitler used in Europe and the slave-owners in America. I do not believe people see the slippery slope we sit upon when we relegate life to an arbitrary status. What may be considered valid life today may change tomorrow, depending upon the blowing winds of societal conditions. Euthanasia for the elderly, as a form of population control, may seem unthinkable at the present time. But, if there is no objective standard regarding life for us to adhere to, it could conceivably become a reality in the future.
I have noticed, when faced with this reality, people have retreated into the corner of, “There is no such thing as moral absolutes.” Our morals and ethics are dictated and grounded in what society deems appropriate. This is fallacious in that it is both self-refuting and argumentum ad populum.
Self-refuting in that, one asserts there are no moral absolutes (objective morality) and therefore we who hold to moral absolutes (such as abortion is murder) are wrong in saying so. However, in the process of asserting there are no moral absolutes, they assert a moral absolute (ex. 1. There are no moral absolutes. 2. It is morally wrong for you to make a moral judgment on something.) They cut themselves off at the knees and defeat their own assertion.
Argumentum ad populum means appeal to popularity. This is what is known as a logical fallacy. A logical fallacy is defined as an error in reasoning due to a misconception or presumption. One may say something like, “Society believes abortion is morally right, therefore… it is right.” An appeal to popularity says something is true because the majority holds to the same (ex. 1. At one time most people thought the earth was flat. 2. Therefore, the earth… was flat.) The absurdity should be evident.
Another sad thing to observe is self-identifying Christians taking a pro-choice position. To take such a position is to shut out the presence of Christ and I would attribute such belief to a lack of discipleship. Individuals who name the name of Christ need to be informed such practice is in direct opposition to the Word of God. Or, is it possible that self-professing Christians holding this position are not truly his. Hence, they are willing to replace a human/man's will in the place of a Holy God's will, and doggedly defend it due to their dimly lit eyes and selfish humanistic lusts. As a Christian, you must allow Christ to sit on the throne within your heart. To place anything else into that position, whether it be material, ideological, or yourself is to practice idolatry.
The abortion issue has been called an, "American Holocaust" and with good reason. In 2008, there were 825,564 abortions reported to the Centers for Disease Control. Since 1973, there have been approximately fifty-million (50,000,000) abortions performed according to the Guttmacher Institute. FIFTY-MILLION! These millions of lives have been snuffed out before they even had a chance.
If you are a Christian and you have held to the pro-choice platform, please reconsider your position. Consult God's word and see the error in giving support to this abhorrent practice. As God's people we need to take a strong stand and pray that God will show us grace to remove this new Molech from our land.
